The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing loans for development in Xinjiang. According to the third paragraph from the bottom, this development will include funds for water supply and wasterwater treatment systems.

MANILA, Apr 25, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- VWNRF | news | PowerRating | PR Charts -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a US$ 105 million loan to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) to improve infrastructure, address environmental concerns and promote sustainable economic growth in northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

We aim to strengthen cross-border trade, tourism development, and economic growth in order to raise living standards while protecting the environment of the poorest and most remote parts of the country, said Amy Leung, Principal Urban Development Specialist of ADBs East Asia Department.

The project focuses on three areas in Xinjiang Alashankou, a major trade and transport hub on the border with Kazakhstan, the Kanas scenic region, and Yining City.

Xinjiang shares borders with eight countries and is the gateway between the PRC and Central Asia. With the historic Silk Road trade route passing through it, it is rich in history and culture. However, the road network in the region needs attention and many urban services are old and inadequate.

The first component of the project will be in Yining City.

It involves the development of four main roads and the repair of 33 local roads, the construction of sanitation facilities, as well as the improvement of water supply infrastructure, wastewater treatment facilities, telecommunications and other municipal services.

The second component will be in Alashankou where 13 roads will be built and six other roads will be repaired.

It will also construct water and wastewater treatment facilities, as well as develop ecological protection areas and carry out other activities.

The final component in the Kanas scenic region, a popular tourist destination bordering Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Mongolia, will see the construction of roads, a water supply system, and solid waste and wastewater treatment facilities.

The project is estimated to cost US$ 190.9 million. As ADB provides US$ 105 million, local authorities takes care of the balance.

ADB will also provide a US$ 150,000 grant to support tourism development and educate ethnic beneficiaries on proper hygiene in the Kanas scenic region.
