A sea water filter
VietNamNet Bridge – The Institute for Application Material Sciences has invented a sea water filter and the first machine was handed over to a fisherman in Da Nang city for trial use.

The lucky fisherman is Pham Thuan, the owner of a fishing boat in Thanh Khe Tay ward, Thanh Khe district, Da Nang city.

According to Le Khac Hoang Lan at the Institute for Application Material Sciences, the sea water filtering technology belongs to American scientists. This technology is used by many countries, but not Vietnam since imported machines are very expensive and not suitable for Vietnam.

In December 2007, the Da Nang government ordered the Institute to research a machine to filter sea water into fresh water, granting VND350 million (nearly $22,000). Lan said the locally-made filter only has a filter imported from the US. The technology is complicated but it is very easy for fishermen to use this equipment.

This machine can filter sea water into fresh and safe water, which can be used immediately. Each hour a filter can process 1.4cu.m of sea water into 300l of fresh water. The filter can be used for 7 years.

Pham Thuan, the fisherman who received the first sea water filter, said a fishing boat can save hundreds of million dong each journey thanks to this equipment. Normally, a fishing boat that goes fishing for over two months has to carry 20-30cu.m of fresh water, equivalent to 20-30 tonnes, enough for over 30 fishermen for 2 months.

The filter can help each fishing boat save 10-15l of fuel since it doesn’t have to carry 20-30 tonnes of water. Moreover, fishing boats can carry other things instead of water.

If the equipment is tested successfully, Da Nang will help its fishermen install this machine on their fishing boats.
